ERSKINE veterans have been handed a cheque as thanks for their service - and given a slap-up lunch too. Douglas Cameron, Peter Wilson, Robert Stevenson and Frank McMahon were invited to the nearby Canny Man pub and restaurant to accept a 1000 donation from the kind-hearted staff.

The latest donation brings the total amount raised by the generous venue to a whopping 6,000 for Erskine.

And manager Marion Craig made sure the lads tucked into some dinner and drinks on the house while they were there.

Douglas served in the Royal Artillery in Burma, Peter in the RAF, Robert in the Gordon Highlanders and Frank in the Royal Army Service Corps.

Jack Watson, recreation co-ordinator of Erskine, said: "We're incredibly grateful to the Canny Man for this donation, and we'd also like to thank Marion and her staff for looking after us with the lunch and drinks.

"I think everyone would agree that our veterans deserve this after all the hard work they did for us."

Marion added: "It was great to see the lads come down and accept our donation, it's the least we could do for them.

"They're welcome down to the Canny Man any time."

The Canny Man is also offering our readers the chance to win a meal for two. The restaurant in nearby Lugton is just 20 minutes drive away - and you're in the ideal countryside venue. Log fires, real ales and homemade produce are all part of the package! To be in with a chance of winning simply fill in the form in tomorrow's Gazette.
