MP Mhairi Black is 'positive' about a Paisley man's idea to create temporary shelters for those left homeless as a result of war, poverty or natural disasters.

Paul Grey, founder of design agency Suisse, met with the Paisley and Renfrewshire South MP to discuss plans for his Rapid Deployment (RD) Shelter.

He has spent seven years perfecting the shelter design and is now trying to raise funds to develop the prototype.

The structures are opaque and shield inhabitants from the wind and rain.

The RD-Shelter can fold down to 25 per cent of its assembled height making it easier to transport.

These shelters are locked from the inside and can fit up to two adults and two children while items can be stored in the base.

Paul spoke to Black on February 8 about his concept saying "the meeting was very positive" and she hopes to raise the subject with Westminster groups.

So far Paul has raised £5,500 out of the £30,000 target which Scottish Enterprise could match-fund and support with a further £70,000 if he reaches his goal.

The RD-Shelter's crowdfunding page has collected donations from as far as Argentina, Spain and Italy, with the largest individual sum being £750.

Paul said: "I want these stockpiled everywhere, distributed by the UN, aid agencies and governments.

"I'm targeting those who are in situations that aren't of their own making, usually because of a natural disaster.

"The refugee crisis is a very topical issue and a lot of people are frustrated by the lack of action.

"The superpowers can take weeks to get aid to them so this is targeting those that need an immediate need for shelter.

"There's no need for tooling or a ground crew for the RD-Shelter as it is all based on tension and it is light enough to transport.

"WSo far I've had nothing but praise for the idea but there is only so far we can go without the funding.

"I want to protect people right away. I can't watch people die on TV and let that happen; the RD-Shelter can potentially save lives."
