Judges were singing the praises of pupils at Mary Russell Primary School when they hit all the right notes at a song festival.

Last year’s P7 pupils were invited to perform at the STUC’s Unions into Schools Songs Festival at Hillhead High, Glasgow on January 29.

Schools from all over Scotland were invited to write a song about social issues important to them.

Mary Russell’s entry “Going Greener” was one of only 12 songs chosen to be featured..

The judges included a panel from the Musician’s Union, EIS, Rab Noakes, rapper Qyeen of NorthernXposure and Stanley Odd.

The theme of the songs submitted was social justice and taking responsibility.

“Going Greener” was the only song written by primary pupils, along with the help of their teacher, Martin Coffield, to collect an award.

The lyrics inspires youngsters in the school and further afield to look after the environment and how our actions can have an affect everywhere.

Speaking about their win, Martin said: “All the schools in Scotland were invited along and we were the only primary class to be showcased at the event.

“We have since been invited to fine tune our song at the recording facilities at Greenwood Academy.

“We weren’t originally meant to perform live at the festival however we were handed a guitar and our song went down a storm.

“I play the guitar and the kids sing, it’s a very upbeat number.

“There was serious encouragement on the day so we hope to invite the Environmental Minister or Mhairi Black along to listen to the kids perform.

“We are keen to get the song out there.”
