A brave shopkeeper took on a knife-wielding thug during an armed robbery in Paisley.

The 45-year-old was working in Jazzy's newsagent in Netherhill Road, Gallowhill, when the crook entered the shop at around 9.05pm on Thursday.

The desperate thief then threatened the shop assistant with a knife and demanded money.

As a four figure sum of cash was handed over, a struggle ensued between the two men, resulting in the shopkeeper receiving cuts to his hand.

Detective Inspector Suzie Chow at Paisley CID said: “This was a very traumatic experience for the shop assistant who did everything he could to foil this robbery and luckily without sustaining any serious injuries."

The suspect ran out of the shop and made off towards Netherhill Crescent.

He is described as white, around 30 years, 5ft 9, medium to muscular build and had an acne scarred complexion.

He was wearing a black and white zipper jacket with his hood up over a baseball cap, a scarf and Timberland style boots.

DI Chow added: “Enquiries so far have revealed that there were several girls hanging around near to the shop at this time and I urge them to contact police immediately as they may be able to provide valuable information that could assist our investigation.

“We also know that a man was also seen nearby at this time and it is vital that we speak to this man as soon as possible. He is described as white, around 26 to 27 years, 5ft 10, slim build and was wearing a white jacket with black stripes and hood. He wore his hood up and also wore a scarf.”
