A STATE of the art room designed to help people with sensory impairments has been officially opened.

The multisensory room, based in The Experience Hillington Park, will be available at no cost through the centre’s access programme thanks to support from funders.

The room can be programmed to create a unique experience tailored to the needs of each visitor, and features interactive, computer-controlled sensory equipment.

Adults and children with sensory impairments, complex learning difficulties, autism and ADHD can enjoy a range of activities.

This includes tracking, colour matching, vocalisation and auditory tasks, or guests can simply relax in a safe, calming environment.

Benefits can include better hand-eye co-ordination, vocalisation and problem solving.

Geoff Barrett from The Experience said: "The multi-sensory room offers a great space for people of all ages with sensory impairments.

"The computer-controlled system has a digital interactive floor, a bubble tube, fibre optic glow lights, an aroma and mist generator, a tactile disc, and vibrating platform.

"Users can experience a range of multisensory environments from a dewy forest, underwater experience, sunny beach, snowy mountain range and much more.

"So whether you care for someone who you think would benefit from this or you have a curious baby or toddler who wants to explore, why not try it out."

Funding secured by The Experience has meant that use of the multi-sensory room is free as part of the centre’s access programme, although The Experience does ask for a small, optional donation to support the room’s running costs.
