A YOUNG person was hospitalised after nearly drowning in a Bishopton reservoir.

Around 20 teenagers were swimming in the water near White Moss Farm when one of the party got tangled in a weed.

He was given CPR before being taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure.

The incident happened on Saturday, June 18 when one of the fishing club members who uses the reservoir spotted the group.

He called out to the youths warning them of the weeds and underwater obstructions that make it difficult to swim.

The group however ignored him causing the fisherman to call the police.

When officers arrived they noticed a small rowing boat in the water with a number of youths inside trying to resuscitate their friend.

The fishing club member was able to get another boat into the reservoir and tow the youths back to the land.

Fire services were contacted with a rescue team and an ambulance took the young person to the hospital.

After receiving CPR the young person recovered and was conscious and breathing though was taken to the hospital.

Inspector Stevie Espie said: "Those considering swimming in quarries over the summer should be aware of the dangers.

"We are seeing an increase to the number of calls in relation to people swimming in reservoirs, quarries and other exposed water.

"Accidents usually happen around this time of year when the weather is good.

"There are a lot of unseen dangers due to currents and underwater obstructions such as weeds.

"We would strongly advise not to enter waters due to the safety concerns.

"In this incident, the youths narrowly avoided coming to harm but it was more luck than anything else."
