A MAN'S flat in Paisley was torched while he slept in what is thought to be a deliberate attack.

Police are continuing enquiries following a wilful fire-raising incident in the Ferguslie Park area on Saturday, June 25.

A 40-year-old man was alone within his flat in Tannahill Road when he was wakened by the sound of his fire alarm being activated at 11pm.

He then noticed that there was smoke coming from his stairway and into his hall and he contacted emergency services.

The fire service extinguished the fire and the man was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital by ambulance where he was treated for smoke inhalation.

Following an investigation by Police and Fire Service it was established that the front door of the flat had been set alight and as such the fire is now being treated as wilful.

Detective Sergeant Ian Ross at Paisley CID said: “This was a deliberate, dangerous act which could have resulted in far more serious consequences not only for the householder but also the other tenants who lived in the flats.

“Enquiries are continuing to trace who is responsible and officers have been carrying out enquiries in the local area and studying CCTV footage in an effort to gather more information.

“At this time I would urge anyone with information that may assist this police investigation to contact Paisley CID via telephone number 101. Alternatively CRIMESTOPPERS can be contacted on 0800 555 111, where anonymity can be maintained.”
