A WOMAN's body has been recovered from the Clyde after a car plunged into the river in Renfrew.

Police confirmed that the woman, who has not been identified, was the only person in the car.

A post mortem examination will take place in due course to establish the exact cause of death.  A Police Scotland spokesman said: "The car remains in the water at this time and efforts are ongoing to remove it.

"Enquiries are continuing to establish the exact circumstances of how the vehicle came to enter the River Clyde, with crash scene examiners conducting an investigation at the location.

"Anyone with information that may assist the investigation is asked to contact officers at Greenock Police Office through 101."

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, the coastgaurd and Police Scotland rushed to the scene shortly before 2pm.

The recovery operation is ongoing just off Kingsinch Road, at Whimbrel Wynd.

One eye witness claimed that the woman collided with a blue Skoda estate car moments before plunging into the water.

A helicopter was also scrambled to the incident.
