LITTLE ones at Auchenlodment Primary put their best foot forward for The Great Auch run to raise cash for school funds.

Youngsters at the Johnstone school wanted to host a sponsored event in their area and decided that the run was the best option.

The pupils raced through the Bluebell Woods where they chose to ran 1k, 2k or 3k depending on their ages.

Traffic wardens, police, and pupils from Johnstone High school acted as safety marshals to ensure that the day ran smoothly.

The nearby nursery also took part making the total number of racers 240 combined with the school.

Many of the pupils' parents and younger siblings got involved in the race or cheered the youngsters along the way.

Around £1,500 was raised and still counting, which will be going towards school funds.

Head teacher Gerry Carlton said: "I am delighted by the community spirit that the run brought on the afternoon.

"We usually have four sponsored events each year and this was our first.

"The next one will be raising funds for a charity chosen by the children.

"Thank you to Morrisons in Johnstone for donating the bottled water - there was one for every child.

"The staff worked very hard on the afternoon to make sure the children were safe.

"The primary ones chose to run the 1k while the older pupils raced the 3k.

"The nursery did their own sponsored run in the morning and afternoon for themselves to raise cash for supplies.

"During the day it was pouring however the sun came out as we were heading off.

"There was a good turn out by the parents who ran with their kids.

"Sixth year pupils at the high school were very helpful and police made sure the kids crossed safely.

"Events like these are great for community spirit, getting everyone involved and bringing the kids outside."
