MP Gavin Newlands is to meet with the immigration minister to discuss the plans for a detention facility in Renfrewshire.
The Gazette previously revealed the plans for the short-term facility next to Glasgow Airport, which would include 51 beds – surrounded by a 12-foot high fence.
The facility will be situated at the site of the former Clansman Club on Abbotsinch Road close to the airport.
This, according to the plans, allows those not entitled to be in the UK to be “held pending their removal from the country.”
The plan for the new site comes after the announcement of the closure of the Dungavel detention centre in South Lanarkshire, which was often criticised.
Posting on his official Facebook page, Gavin Newlands MP said: “I am meeting the UK Government's Immigration Minister today [October 19] to discuss in greater detail the proposal to build a short-term detention facility near Glasgow Airport.
“I am keen to explore a number of issues about this proposed facility, including what he means by 'vulnerable persons' and why he wants to detain them in facilities like this.
“This centre will have a significant impact, both across Scotland and in Renfrewshire, and it's important that we receive as much information as possible. I'll continue to keep local constituents updated.”
