VOLUNTEERS at the Salvation Army have dished out warm praise to caring people who supported their winter clothes appeal.

Hundreds of woolly items, including hats, scarves, snoods, gloves and thick socks, were donated at a collection day organised by the charity’s Paisley team.

These will now be distributed to vulnerable people living on the streets.

Paisley-based Salvation Army volunteer Susan Nivan, who co-ordinated the collection at the Mill Street citadel on Saturday, was delighted with the response.

She said: “The collection was a great success as we managed to collect dozens of big boxes full of items.

“People came on the day and we also advertised the collection to the public during our Christmas toy appeal.

“Some adults came in with their children to teach them about giving things to those less fortunate.

“One elderly lady who often donates to us has difficulty walking but she also managed to come in with a big bag of items.”

Efforts are now being made to ensure the donated clothes reach the people who need them most.

Susan added: “The donations will be divided between our Salvation Army branches in Paisley and Glasgow.

“We run our breakfast club for the less fortunate on Fridays too, so anyone there will get a chance to receive items.

“As the weather gets colder and wetter, those living on the streets will need clean, dry items to keep them warm and we want them to be readily available.”

According to Shelter Scotland, there were 947 homeless applications in Renfrewshire during 2015/16.
