POLICE are investigating a report that a woman was raped next to a primary school in Elderslie.

The 27-year-old is said to have been attacked near Wallace Primary on Monday, February 20.

Officers sealed off the area between Byres Road and Glenmalloch Place as they checked the area for evidence.

Simon Wright, area commander for Johnstone, Renfrew and the villages said: "On Monday, police received a report of a serious sexual assault of a 27-year-old in Elderslie.

"Enquiries are continuing."

The school were made aware of the incident and lessons continued as normal the following day.

A Renfrewshire Council spokesperson said: "The school has been notified by the police of an incident outwith the school grounds.

"We have made parents aware that a crime scene outwith the school grounds is being investigated."

Residents have spoken about their shock following the incident which is believed to have happened at a back lane.

A shop worker said: "I don't know much other than the police have been going by all day and people have mentioned there was an assault near the school."

A cafe worker added: "The police came in earlier to ask questions. I think something happened round the back of the school near where the path is."
