POLICE have stepped up patrols in Elderslie after a rapist targeted a woman near a primary school.

An investigation into the terrifying attack, which took place on a footpath on Monday night, is continuing.

And police are increasing their presence in the area as they carry out a manhunt.

Detective Inspector Louise Harvie said: “This incident will no doubt be of concern to local residents. However, I would like to reassure them that additional officers are patrolling the area and anyone with any concerns should have no hesitation in speaking to them.”

The 27-year-old woman was attacked while she was walking along a footpath between Byres Road and Glenmalloch Place, near to Wallace Primary, at around 8pm on Monday.

She was approached by a man who struck her, causing her to fall over. The fiend then subjected the woman to a serious sexual assault.

Police have said the suspect is described as white, aged between 35 and 50, of medium to stocky build and with dark hair that is receding on top.

At the time, he was wearing a light-coloured t-shirt.

Officers have been carrying out door-to-door enquiries and are gathering CCTV footage from around the area in the hope the rapist was caught on camera.

Police have also said dog walkers may hold the key to snaring the sex beast.

Det Insp Harvie added: “This area is well used by local people as a shortcut to nearby shops on Main Street. It is also a popular spot for dog walkers.

"I am appealing to anyone who may have been in or near the area on Monday evening - perhaps you saw someone acting a little suspiciously, maybe you saw someone running off?

"Any piece of information could assist our enquiries and I would urge you to contact us.”
