NURSERY kids arrived in style for their graduation ceremony in 2007... by turning up in a fire engine.

The tots from Weans World, in Johnstone, attended the event a couple of months earlier than expected, to allow them to say a fond farewell to nursery manager Lorraine Kirkwood.

Lorraine left the nursery, in Brewery Street, after a rollercoaster year which saw it broken into three times, with thousands of pounds worth of equipment stolen.

She said she was amazed by the support she received from the local community.

And, to show her appreciation, she arranged a special graduation event for the children.

Lorraine said: “I hired an American-style fire engine and mini caps and gowns for the children, plus one for myself.

“I wanted to graduate the kids myself before I go and I would really like to thank the parents.

“With everything that has happened, the parents always asked: ‘How can we help and what can we do?’ It has made a big difference.”
