POLICE investigating a rape near a primary school in Elderslie have revealed the sex beast is thought to have suffered a facial injury.

Detectives want to hear from any witnesses who saw a man with a face wound following the terrifying attack, which took place on a footpath between Byres Road and Glenmalloch Place.

The rapist targeted his 27-year-old victim at around 8pm on Monday, February 20.

Detective Inspector Louise Harvie said: “Whilst we understand that this crime has caused a great deal of concern amongst the local community, I would like to reassure people that our officers are doing absolutely everything they can to trace the person responsible.

“We are completely focused on catching this despicable individual.

“If you were in the surrounding area of Elderslie on the evening of Monday, February 20, please cast your mind back and think about whether you may have seen anything out of the ordinary.

"We also believe the man may have had a facial injury and, if anyone saw someone in the aftermath of the incident who looked like they may have been hurt, then it is crucial that we speak to you.

“If you have any information at all, no matter how significant you think it might be, let us determine that, as it could prove vital to our investigation."

A dedicated team of detectives is continuing to carry out extensive enquiries in a bid to snare the rapist.

He approached his victim from behind and hit her, causing her to fall to the ground, before carrying out the serious sexual assault.

The suspect is described as white, between 35 and 50, of medium to stocky build and with dark hair that is receding on top.

At the time, he was wearing dark trousers and a light-coloured t-shirt.

Officers have been carrying out door-to-door enquiries and examining CCTV footage but are appealing to the public for any information that could help them identify the rapist.

Det Insp Harvie added: “I cannot stress enough the important role that the public can play in assisting our investigation.

"I would urge anyone with information, no matter how small, to come forward, as it may be able to assist with our enquiries."

Information can be passed on to the police by calling 101. Alternatively, ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, where details can be given in confidence.
