RAIL bosses have defended security measures at a Johnstone station following the death of a man who was struck by a train.

Services between Johnstone and Kilwinning were suspended after the tragedy took place near Milliken Park station at around 1.20pm on Monday.

Police are not naming the dead man, who was 46, but have confirmed the incident is not being treated as suspicious.

Last year, gates were installed at the end of the platforms to reduce access to the tracks.

Grids at the bottom of platform ramps and different coloured lighting were also introduced in an attempt to discourage people from walking onto the line.

A Network Rail spokesman said: “We’ve put in place a range of initiatives to reduce fatalities and are working with Samaritans to train railway staff in how to identify people exhibiting vulnerable behaviour.”
