A TALENTED father-and-son team from Erskine swung into action to qualify for a national crazy golf final.

Peter Kelly, 54, and four-year-old Anthony Finnie claimed victory in regional qualifying for the Adventure Golf Championships.

Now the pair can look forward to the grand final, to be played at Ryder Cup venue The Belfry, near Birmingham, on Friday, September 8.

Peter, who is a member at Gleddoch Hotel Spa and Golf, in Langbank, and young Anthony managed some impressive putting in the regional qualifier at Great Western Golf, in Clydebank.

“In terms of training or preparation for the competition, I did very little,” admitted Peter. “I do, however, play every weekend at Gleddoch.

“We’re very happy about getting through to the finals. It’s a brilliant opportunity for us.

“Anthony is very excited as he loves golf.

“It really is quite an achievement for a four year old.”

The Adventure Golf Championships, run by American Golf, aim to introduce more people to the game.

The event is designed to give complete beginners the chance to compete alongside seasoned players, with the emphasis on friendly competition and fun.

Daniel Gathercole, director of marketing and communications at American Golf, said: “We’ve added adventure golf to our championship events this year so that anyone can come along and have fun taking part in an event, even if they’ve never picked up a golf club before.

“Adventure Golf is a fantastic way of introducing young people to golf and it’s great that absolute beginners can have fun playing alongside regular golfers.

“Who knows, a competition like this could be the start of a journey that takes someone from an absolute beginner to winning a major.”
