A TALENTED engineer has spoken of her pride at winning a high profile industry award.

Meryl Devlin, 31, is the second female in a row to win the annual Scottish Engineering/Incorporation of Hammermen of Glasgow Award.

And Meryl, who works for Dumbarton-based Aggreko Manufacturing, said she was thrilled at picking up the industry gong.

She told The Reporter: “It was a big surprise to win the award and definitely the icing on the cake for me.”

Meryl’s project was to design a generator system to operate on heavy fuel oil which she achieved within an 18-month timescale.

But Meryl, who only joined Aggreko Manufacturing in January last year, was quick to point out that she was part of a team effort.

“We had a team of around 50 people all working on this from all over the world,” said Mery.

“We have offices in Dubai and all over but I was very pleased when I received a letter to say that I’d won this award.”

The award is presented to a young graduate engineer who has been instrumental in a project which has resulted in a major benefit to the company.

Meryl played an active part in coming up with the power generator and the judging panel were clearly bowled over by what she and her colleagues created.

At the Annual Awards Dinner of Scottish Engineering, the support group for the engineering industry in Scotland, Meryl was presented with the award by John McKnight, Deacon of the incorporation of Hammermen of Glasgow.

She said: “I’d won a couple of awards earlier on in my career but nothing of this nature.

“The project was a very challenging one to work on but very rewarding too.

“The task was to design a generator which operated on heavy fuel oil, then it was all about trying to produce one.”

“I’m delighted to have won this award.”
