SHOPPERS are being enticed into Johnstone town centre, thanks to the introduction of a new market.

The craft fair, which enjoyed its first outing at the weekend, is just one of a series of regular events being staged by the Johnstone Business Consortium (JBC).

It is hoped these will inject more life into the heart of the town, encouraging residents to put money back into the local economy.

As well as goods being sold by Johnstone businesses, there was music at Houstoun Square.

Carole Macfadyen, of JBC, is hoping the market will become a monthly event.

She said: “There was a good turnout for our first market and the town seemed to be livelier.

“We are looking to build on this for our next event, which will be on Saturday, August 19.

“Other big events coming up include our Christmas market and Halloween event.”

Shoppers were also encouraged to support worthy causes by attending a fundraising event at the Wee Cafe @ 47, with 100 per cent of all food takings on the day being donated to Johnstone Burgh Football Club and St Vincent’s Hospice, in Howwood.

A raffle is currently being held at the cafe, with prizes worth £1,000 up for grabs.

Derek Brown, who owns the High Street business, said: “We managed to raise £850. It’s good to have events like this as it shows what the town has to offer.”

Anyone who would like to buy a £2 raffle ticket can pop into the cafe, with the winners to be revealed on Saturday.
