VILLAGERS have been left horrified after a church’s community garden was torched, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage.
Arsonists, who police suspect to be youths, set a polytunnel alight in the garden at Lochwinnoch Parish Church at around 7.45pm on Sunday.
Benches and other garden equipment was also damaged, with the repair bill expected to reach £3,000.
James McNair, who is the church’s session clerk, said: “Someone knocked on my door at 7.30pm and I could see the smoke billowing through the sky.
“It’s believed that kids managed to get access to the key safe in the wall to get through the gate.”
A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesman said no-one was injured.
He added: “Crews discovered a large garden polytunnel well alight and used a high-powered hose to put out the flames.”
Sergeant Alan Mack, who is based at Johnstone Police Office, said: “Enquiries are ongoing to find those responsible.”
