A MAN who battered his dad in a drunken rage at his parents’ home in Johnstone has been fined £500.

Alexander Kerr, 24, lost the plot after his mum told him to leave the house in Scott Place.

He refused to budge and then took issue when his dad, Robert Kerr, tried to push him out of the door - raining punches on his 56-year-old victim’s head.

Kerr was also accused of leaving his mum, Jessie Kerr, scarred for life.

And he lost control of his emotions during his trial at Paisley Sheriff Court, breaking down in tears as his mum gave evidence about the night in question.

Mrs Kerr, 50, said she was taken to hospital, where two stitches were used to seal a lip wound.

When asked about what happened that evening, she told the court: “I’ve got high blood pressure and things.

“I don’t know. When I fainted, there was a lot of glass and things scattered about.”

Kerr had denied assaulting his mum by repeatedly punching and kicking her on the head and body.

And, following her evidence, he pleaded guilty to assaulting his dad and behaving in a threatening or abusive manner by shouting and swearing at their home, while the charge that he assaulted his mum was dropped.

Procurator fiscal depute John Penman explained: “This man has appeared somewhat intoxicated at his mum and dad’s house in the early hours, there was some verbals, he was asked to leave.

“Mrs Kerr shouts her husband to assist, he appears in the kitchen area to assist. He was assaulted, and assaulted in the manner now libelled, by his son.”

The court heard that Mr Kerr was also taken to hospital, where he was treated for a “superficial laceration.”

Kerr was later arrested and kept in police custody overnight before appearing in court.

Defence lawyer Charlie McCusker said Kerr, a first offender, earns £24,000 per year as a mobile ground engineer.

The lawyer added: “They are a very close family and hope to be a close family again.

“He accepts he punched his father and that his father was perfectly able to ask him to leave. He didn’t want his mum to have to give evidence and tried to resolve this by offering a plea.

“He was an angry young man going home when he shouldn’t have been and he’s greatly remorseful for that.

“This has devastated the family.”

Sheriff Seith Ireland could have caged Kerr for up to 12 months for the offences, which took place on January 22 this year, but instead opted to fine him after being told he had a 10-week-old child.

As he fined Kerr, of Dundonald Road, Paisley, a total of £500 - £200 for the shouting and swearing and £300 for assaulting his dad - Sheriff Ireland told him: “You’ve never been in trouble before and you’re a hard-working young man. You’ve never had any problems with your parents before but you had too much drink - you were in drink and in a bad mood.”"
