THE Paisley 2021 bid has inspired an ambitious creative to draw up a transport idea he believes will put the town on the map.

Dan Warren has drawn a plan for a subway network linking key areas around Renfrewshire, and came up with the idea after his own home town – Warrington – failed in its bid to be UK City of Culture 2021.

Consisting of four different lines the map covers the whole of Paisley town centre as well as lines leading to Johnstone and Renfrew.

After seeing the success of the Paisley 2021 bid, the town caught Dan’s eye as he felt that, like Warrington, it has a fascinating history many may not know about.

The 32-year-old, who works in customer service, also created a pub and bar map, in the style of the famous Glasgow Clockwork Orange, for those who fancy a night out on the town.

Dan told the Gazette: “I felt inspired to create the map after positive feedback from versions of other places. My Warrington version got noticed as part of the City of Culture bid.

“As Paisley is close to Glasgow which has its subway line, some in the area I’m sure would like to see it extended to get around the city and beyond.”

The map-maker is intrigued by Paisley’s history, including the pattern created from the weaving industry, the architecture including the abbey and the witches trial.

Dan has also compared Paisley to Warrington as a large town which has lots to offer despite being close to a major city.

He added: “I came up with the pub map after speaking to writer Claire Casey who thought linking the pubs, and bars could bring work as people could do pub crawls or just to visit.

“This would gain extra visitors who may not have thought of Paisley as a place for the evening with Glasgow having the larger nightlife.”

Paisley 2021 bid director Jean Cameron said: “We absolutely love this Paisley underground-style map. Our thanks go to Dan for thinking of us and taking the time to create it.

“With Glasgow Airport, Paisley Gilmour Street, Braehead and Hillington all featured, it shows off how well connected the Paisley area is as a destination for travel, business and leisure.

“It’s also nice to see a mention for one of our unique architectural treasures – the Grand Fountain in the Fountains Gardens.

“The UK City of Culture competition has helped create new friendships between places across the country.

“Sadly, Warrington didn’t join us in making the shortlist but it’s lovely to see a member of their creative community using his artistic talents to help raise the profile of the places which did.”
