BARRHEAD residents are in for a fright as the town prepares to host its first-ever Hallowe’en parade.

The steering group behind the Barrhead Business Improvement District (BID) has unveiled plans for a spook-tacular event which will involve LED lighting-clad dancers, torch bearers and live music.

A number of BID member businesses will open their doors to members of the public to hold activities such as pumpkin-carving and mask-making workshops.

The All About Barrhead steering group is encouraging children to don their most frightening or creative costume for a fancy dress competition, which will see two prize winners walk away with £50 each.

Community groups and organisations are also welcome to take part in the procession, which will leave from the Tesco store in Kelburn Street and head along Cross Arthurlie Street, Carlibar Road and Main Street.

The parade will then culminate in a ceremony at the community square outside the town’s Asda store, where fancy dress champions for 10-and-under and over-10 categories will be crowned.

Paul Santi, BID chairman, is hopeful the Hallowe’en parade will build on past successes, such as last year’s Christmas lights switch-on and this summer’s Barrhead Rainbow Run.

He told the Barrhead News: “Following the feedback from our previous big events, we knew we had to host another event in the town that the whole community could enjoy.

“The Business Improvement District board have a number of plans to bring more celebrations to the town and we hope local people continue to support them and the work that local businesses are doing to bring theses events to Barrhead.”

The Hallowe’en parade is set to take place on Saturday, October 28.

BID members hope that as many of the town’s residents will join them along the route.

Parade participants are asked to meet at the Tesco store at 4pm before departing at 5pm and reaching their destination at around 5.45pm.

Anyone who would like to take part in the parade is asked to send an email to doreen@allaboutbarrhead.co.uk in advance for more details.
