A COUNCIL-RUN nursery has been labelled “weak” following a recent inspection by the Care Inspectorate.

The West Dunbartonshire Council run Bellsmyre ELC, on Howatshaws Road, was given the verdict after an inspection in May.

But it’s only now that the findings have come to light.

The service is purpose built within a new school campus and is registered for 110 children aged three years to “not yet attending primary school age”.

According to the inspectors, the facility was “weak” in the following four quality indicators: quality of care and support; quality of environment; quality of staffing; and quality of management and leadership.

And the report also highlights some hygiene issues during the inspection.

The report states: “We observed that a significant number of the areas in the service were in need of cleaning. In particular food crumbs were observed round the bin in the snack area; and in the kitchen.

“One of the toilets was found to be soiled and staff advised that this had been identified at the end of the previous week.

“The window ledges; flooring; windows; and carpets were found to be dirty.

“One of the bins hadn’t been emptied from the previous week.

“Some of these issues were also highlighted by parents during our discussions.

“The head of centre advised that she had raised this as an ongoing issue with the local authority.”

The inspection team has made a number of recommendations where the nursery can improve, while WDC has emphasised that “significant progress” has been made at the nursery since May’s inspection A council spokesperson said: “We are committed to delivering the best possible learning environments and experiences to to young learners across all our centres and are sorry this was not evident on the visit to Bellsmyre ELCC.”
