A BARRHEAD man is helping to launch a project which aims to make it easier for those with learning disabilities to attend late-night events.

Michael McEwan, chairman of the East Renfrewshire Disability Action (ERDA) group, has started working with the Stay Up Late Scotland initiative, which organises special gigs and club nights for people who have conditions such as autism.

Explaining the thinking behind the project, Mr McEwan told the Barrhead News: “Stay Up Late Scotland was set up to ensure that person-centred planning for people with learning disabilities and autism meant that it truly reflected what an individual wanted to do in his or her life.

“Many people with learning disabilities, and autism, aren’t always able to stay up late to do the things that so many people who don’t need support take for granted.

“Going out to see bands, clubbing or seeing friends is part of everyday life for lots of people. However, if you have a learning disability, you may need support to do this.

“Lots of people with learning disabilities aren’t able to lead full and active social lives because their support workers finish at 10pm, meaning lots of people with learning disabilities leave events at 9pm.”
