A WEEKLY lunch club in Barrhead is serving up welcome support for those battling breast cancer.

Proceeds from each of this month’s Soup Stop events at Bourock Parish Church are being donated to Breast Cancer Care.

Satisfied customers have been quick to lap up ladles of tasty home-made soup at the Main Street church.

And, judging by the success of last week’s event, the remaining drop-ins will significantly bolster the £23,000-plus the initiative has generated for the charity since it began in 2008.

Linda Dye, Soup Stop organiser, credited the community for turning out in their droves to show support.

She said: “Since we started nine years ago, we have raised more than £60,000 for charity.

“Soup Stop runs every Friday lunchtime, from 11.45am to 2pm. We serve home-made soup and light lunches.

“A group of seven ladies from the church started it when we retired. It is very well supported and very busy every Friday.

“So much of the money goes to the church but we have a charity of the month and, for October, it is Breast Cancer Care.

“We also had a Ladies’ Pink Lunch on Sunday that raised more than £2,000 for the same charity.

“That’s not the final total because the rest of the October proceeds will go to that too.”

This month’s takings should see the Soup Stop team break through the £25,000 fundraising barrier for Breast Cancer Care – something its organisers would love to see happen.

Linda added: “One of the charity workers was able to tell us that, over the nine years, we have raised more than £23,000 for Breast Cancer Care.

“And, in September, we raised more than £800 for the Richmond Fellowship, which supports people with dementia and learning difficulties.

“We want to thank all of our regular customers who support us every week.

“We would also be happy to see some new faces.”
