Helensburgh Hockey Club’s season continued in style at the weekend as all three teams notched up wins.

The first team sealed a resounding 8-0 win over Kelburne at the National Hockey Centre, the second team won 2-1 at Western, and the third team came back from 3-0 down to win 4-3 at home to Uddingston.

Burgh’s first team got off to the perfect start when Black was first to a rebound to score against Kelburne.

Burgh kept their under pressure and it eventually paid off as Helensburgh doubled their lead. Black slipped the ball to the striker, who slotted it past the onrushing keeper.

The second half was a different story as the goals rained in for Burgh.

A quick triple salvo put Helensburgh out of sight: MacKenzie got the first, converting from a tight angle after beating two players, and the same player set up Black to smash home the fourth from inside the D.

Burgh’s fifth was one to savour. Starting at the back with McWilliam and Caulfield interchanging passes, the move then went through midfield with Kennedy, before Stuart played a delightful one-two with Cox, and he slotted into an empty net.

Stuart got his second with a simple tap in to make it 6-0 before Hartopp and Cox added some more shine to the scoreline.

The second team had a hard fought game at Western.

Helensburgh were up against it with a number of regular defenders missing, but the makeshift backline held firm in the first half and kept a clean sheet.

At the other end, Cox struck well at a short corner to make it 1-0.

In the second half Western fought back, scoring a short corner of their own. But a late winner from McKend sent the away crowd into a frenzy and secured the win.

The third team were up against an experienced Uddingston and showed their mettle by recovering from a disastrous start.

The young Burgh side went in at half time 2-0 down after a slow start.

A third soon followed as Uddingston looked impressive and Burgh looked dead and buried.

But with around 20 minutes to go Helensburgh got a route back into the tie. Harris went on a mazy run before a nice one-two with Bowman set him up for a fine finish.

Harris was at the heart of things again as he manoeuvred space in the D before finishing well.

With less than 10 minutes to go, Helensburgh fought for an equaliser.

Niblock managed to win a short corner, and Richardson pushed the ball in – it looked to be wide of the mark, but J. Murphy hit the sweet spot of the ball to send the crowd into raptures as it ricocheted onto the backboard.

In the closing stages the unthinkable happened. Harris fought for the ball back in midfield and managed to dribble past three players before calmly placing the ball under the onrushing keeper to give Burgh a terrific comeback win.
