POLICE have stepped up patrols in Renfrew in a bid to tackle a major spike in overnight break-ins and thefts.
PCs Corrie Keith and Ross Wilson announced they would be out in force in the early hours of the morning at a community council meeting last week in response to residents’ concerns.
Houses and garages have been targeted in recent months, with bikes, jewellery and cars stolen.
Renfrew Golf Club was also targeted for the third time in six months when a man was disturbed trying to smash a window at the greenkeeper’s house just after 4pm on Tuesday, October 3.
The town’s bowling club at Robertson Park has also been broken into in recent months. In one incident, four padlocks were damaged, with one being torn off the gate completely.
Inspector Cassie Glass, of Renfrewshire Police, told The Gazette: “We have stepped up patrols and officers have been out in plain clothes more often to try and catch thieves in the act.
“There have been no break-ins since that started, so maybe it’s working.
“If you see anything suspicious, please do call us straight away and I’d like to remind everyone about the importance of alarms as these can and have acted as an excellent deterrent."
