THE chairman of Johnstone Community Council has stepped down as part of a shake up at the top of the group.

Ron Ewing made the announcement at an annual general meeting held last Thursday, saying he wished to concentrate on work outside the group after two years at the helm.

Mr Ewing’s wife and group treasurer Carole has also left her position, as has secretary Sheila King.

Mr Ewing insists his passion for Johnstone remains undimmed, however, and will return to community council meetings as an ordinary member.

He said: “I would like to thank both Carole and Sheila for all their hard work over the past few years.

“They have stepped up to their roles very well and I would like to acknowledge that.

He added: “I have had a very eventful time as chairman and wish everyone all the best.”

Corseford man Tom Wallace, a 58-year-old retired lecturer who has lived in the town his entire life, is the new chairman.

He will be joined by Iain McMillan, a former Labour councillor for Johnstone South, who fills the post of secretary, while long-serving community council member Linda Flint is the new treasurer.

Mr Wallace told the meeting: “We all care about Johnstone and, over the next year, we will move onto new things and reach out to other organisations who would like to get involved.

“In particular, we will be in discussion with staff from the West Lane Gardens centre, which provides lifeline services to the community but, sadly, faces closure.

“This is a chance to make changes in the community and work closer with local organisations.”

Alternatively, new members are welcome to come along to the next meeting, which takes place at Johnstone Town Hall on Thursday, November 9, starting at 7pm.
