A BUST of one of the University of the West of Scotland’s founders has been unveiled as part of its 120-year anniversary celebrations.

The artwork of philanthropist Peter Brough was made by Professor Alexander Stoddart, sculptor in ordinary to the Queen in Scotland, whose studio is based on the Paisley campus.

It was unveiled by UWS Chancellor, Dame Elish Angiolini.

In addition to being the 120th anniversary of the founding of what was known as Paisley Technical School, 2017 marks 25 years since university status was granted, when it became the University of Paisley, and 10 years since it merged with Bell College to become UWS.

Professor Craig Mahoney, principal and vice-chancellor of UWS, said: “We are extremely proud of our history and what we have achieved over the last 120 years and it is great to be able to recognise the hugely-important role philanthropists such as Peter Brough played in the creation of the institution.

“Our year of celebration enables us to recognise our significant achievements and the rich legacies on which we are built, as well as looking forward to achieving our ambitions.”
