MORE than 80 roads across Renfrewshire are to undergo a major transformation as part of a multi-million pound programme of improvements.

Renfrewshire Council has injected £7.2million into tackling the area’s pothole epidemic – its biggest ever annual investment in the roads network.

A total of 86 routes are to be resurfaced, along with 46 footpaths. Another 33 roads will be patched to protect them from future damage.

The list of improvements stretches right across the region, with work planned in Johnstone, Renfrew, Linwood, Erskine, Paisley and other towns and villages.

Councillor Cathy McEwan, convener of infrastructure, land and environment board, said: “We have designed a programme that ensures every community sees a benefit in their area.”

The spending spree is good news for motorists such as Bridge of Weir woman Ruth Keir, who had to have her tyres repaired twice within a couple of days due to potholes.

In Johnstone, resurfacing will take place on the B787 Beith Road, from Hallhill Road to the 30mph gateway, and on the B789 Barochan Road. There will also be work on Kilbarchan Road, from Ladeside Drive to Quarrelton Road, as well as on MacDowell Street, Spateston Road and Linn Park Gardens.

In Erskine, the southbound A726 at Centreholm, Rashielee Road and Linburn Road will be resurfaced, as will sections of Barhill Road.

Renfrew will see resurfacing taking place on Ferry Road, from Canal Street to Orchard Road, and on PaisleyRoad, from Broadloan to Cockels Loan. Sandy Road will also be repaired, from Cockels Loan to Newmains, as well as an area of Queen Street.

In Linwood, the A761 Bridge of Weir Road will be resurfaced, along with a large area of Bridge Street.

Across the villages, work will take place on Greenock Road in Bishopton and Inchinnan; Stepends Road and High Street in Lochwinnoch; Houston Road and Kilbarchan Road in Bridge of Weir; Locher Road and Kilbbleston Road in Kilbarchan; Kilmacolm Road and North Street in Houston; and Newton Avenue in Elderslie.

Paisley will see improvements made in Renfrew Road, Glasgow Road, Gleniffer Road, Broomlands Street, Penilee Road, Love Street and Seedhill Road, amongst others.

There will also be a programme of pothole repairs.
