An Erskine dance team stepped up for two good causes by staging a series of fundraising events.

Members of DancExcel, who train at Rashielea Primary School and Bargarran Community Centre, put their best foot forward to support Team Mila and Abbie’s Army.

Team Mila is a fundraising group for Erskine tot Mila Marr, who has cystic fibrosis.

Abbie’s Army is a charity which supports brain tumour research in memory of Abbie Mifsud, who tragically died at the age of six.

The DancExcel team took part in a sponsored bounce at a trampoline park, as well as bag-packing and organising a raffle.

That led to a cheque for £230 being handed to four-year-old Mila by dance teacher Emma Marshall’s daughter Amber, who holds the Miss Natural Beauty Scotland title.

Mila’s mum Vicky said: “I went to school with Emma, so she is aware of all the fundraising we do for Team Mila, but I was still chuffed to bits that she thought of us because there are millions of charities out there.”

Emma said: “A large part of the pageant system is about community work and raising charity money and, to date, Amber has raised £3000 for various charities over the past two years through this.

“When Amber won her title, she was able to choose her own charity to fundraise for alongside the Natural Beauty Pageants chosen charity, Abbie’s Army, who work in aid of children suffering from brain cancer.

“We have seen the amazing work Team Mila do to raise funds for Cystic Fibrosis research and, living locally, we wanted to get involved.

“She will continue to raise funds for Team Mila until June when she hands her national title over.”

Mila’s mum Vicky was touched that the dance group had thought of them when deciding who to fundraise for.

She said: “I went to school with the group’s teacher Emma so she is aware of all the fundraising we do for Team Mila but I was still chuffed to bits that she thought of us because there are millions of charities out there.”

The benefit of the dance group’s involvement with Mila and her family goes beyond just raising money though.

Emma added: “Mila now also attends our gymnastic classes, as activities like this help keep the lungs clear, and so are beneficial to her as well.”
