Education bosses were exploring the possibility of demolishing Park Mains High School, in Erskine, in 2008.

The far-reaching scheme planned to pump a large amount of money into constructing a new state-of-the-art education facility.

Refurbishment was scheduled to take place between July 2008 and August 2010, although councillors were also considering building a brand new school altogether.

The estimated cost of the refurbishment was expected to be considerably greater than first anticipated when approved in 2004, possibly making the new-build option better value for money.

Council leader, Councillor Derek Mackay, said at the time: “The original plans for the refurbishment of Park Mains High School were developed in 2004 and, as it has become clear, costs may rocket.

“The risks of refurbishment costs increasing and the possibility of time delays associated with additional work makes a new-build more attractive.”

Both of Erskine’s SNP councillors, Iain Nicolson and Jim McQuade, backed the plans for a new school.

Councillor Nicolson said: “I am sure it would be welcomed by the people of Erskine.

“The current Park Mains High School refurbishment presents logistical challenges and doesn’t include the replacement of the school windows.

“We can do better than this.”
