A STREET-WISE competition entrant was handed a welcome windfall back in 2008.

Sandra Leckie scooped a prize of £200 after entering a contest to name some new retirement apartments built by developers McCarthy and Stone in the Braehead area of Renfrew.

Although Mrs Leckie no longer lived in Renfrew, she grew up in the town and told how she had spent many happy Sundays visiting the gardens by the ferry.

Mrs Leckie said at the time: “I thought back to my childhood and the name just came to me.

“I’ve never won anything before, so I’m delighted.

“Added to which, I know of McCarthy and Stone because I used to be a hairdresser and I still have clients who live at McCarthy and Stone’s development in Paisley.”

Thanks to her winning entry, Kingsferry Court was confirmed as the name for the development being built at Ferry Village.

More than one entrant had chosen Kingsferry as the title so, under the rules of the competition, bosses at the housebuilder put them all into a hat and drew out Mrs Leckie as the winner.

Roanna Laverty, marketing executive for McCarthy and Stone, said they received more than 50 entries for the competition.

She added: “We were really pleased to get so many entries.

“Given the development is on King’s Inch Road and Renfrew Ferry is nearby, the winning name stood out as the best.

“It would be nice to reward everyone who submitted it but we can only have one winner.”
