Paisley playwright John Byrne has delved into his past to support a charity book sale.

The talented Buddie, who is also a renowned artist, donated a copy of his book Tutti Frutti to the annual Christian Aid sale that got under way at St Andrew’s and St George’s West Church, in Edinburgh, at the weekend.

Byrne is also patron of this year’s event, following in the footsteps of fellow writers such as Ian Rankin and Liz Lochhead.

Tutti Frutti was broadcast on the BBC as a six-part drama series, featuring the exploits of a keyboard player who returns to Glasgow after the sudden death of the former frontman of has-been rock ‘n’ roll band The Majestics.

A spokesperson for Christian Aid said: “From a hastily-gathered table and a couple of boxes of books in the church doorway in 1974, this event is now believed to be the biggest charity book sale in Britain and one of the largest in the world.

“Hundreds of volunteers and experts from as far afield as America and Europe have been keenly sorting and pricing over 60,000 donated books and collectables.”

Other highlights of this year’s sale include a signed first edition of Rankin’s first book Knots and Crosses.

Proceeds will be used by Christian Aid to support some of the poorest communities in the world.
