Members of Johnstone Pipe Band proved to be a smash hit as they performed at the 2018 British Pipe Band Championships in Paisley.

More than 4,000 pipers and drummers from 130 bands were at the St James Playing Fields at the weekend.

And it was a successful gathering for the Johnstone musicians as they gained first place in their category.

With about half of their ranks made up of school pupils, the Grade 3B band played their way to victory against rivals from across the UK and beyond.

Alan McGeoch, secretary of Johnstone Pipe Band, said: “Having only recently been promoted to this grade, to win their category at this event is something special.

“The number of young people in the band gives them the potential to get better and better.”

Also enjoying success at the Paisley event was the Renfrewshire Schools Pipe Band, which managed to secure third place in their grade.

Mr McGeoch added: “The success of this band is probably the most notable of all because they are essentially all at a novice level but still managed to place third in their first ever championships.”

Johnstone Pipe Band also competed at Grade 1 level, finishing ninth in their section.

Musicians from as far afield as Denmark took part in this year’s championships, which were watched by thousands of spectators.

Among those competing was Kilbarchan Pipe Band, with the ScottishPower Pipe Band declared overall winners.

As well as the music, crowds were able to enjoy a Highland dancing competition, as well as a funfair and sporty activities from Renfrewshire Leisure, Paisley Rugby Club, and Renfrewshire’s award-winning Street Stuff team.

Handing out the prizes as event chieftain was Renfrewshire Provost Lorraine Cameron.

She said: “Once again, the British Pipe Band Championships was a wonderful family day out and it was a pleasure to be part of it.

“It brings with it a massive audience from the length and breadth of Scotland and internationally, and that influx of visitors is worth a six-figure amount for the local economy.

“It was also great to see our own school pupils get the experience of competing as part of a major championships and showcase the musical talent we have here in Renfrewshire.”

Ian Embelton, chief executive of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association, added: “Once again, Paisley and Renfrewshire made a great host and we look forward to bringing the event back here over the next three years.”
