AN investigation has been launched after new homes worth more than £250,000 were set on fire.

Two properties under construction in the Weirs Wynd development, just outside Brookfield, went up in flames at about 1am on Saturday.

Police have said they are following a positive line of enquiry after the blaze at the Barratt Homes development, near Barrochan Road.

The fire could be seen for miles, with many people on social media expressing their shock at the sight.

David Scott, managing director of Barratt Developments West Scotland, said security at the site has been stepped up. He added: “No completed homes were damaged.

“The fire brigade attended and no-one was hurt. We are working with police on their investigation.”

Homes at the site range in value from £250,000 to £470,000 and cover a mix of three-, four,- five- and six-bedroom properties.

The site was formerly home to Merchiston Hospital.

Police want to hear from anyone who has information about the fire.

Sergeant Alan Mack, who is based at Johnstone police office, said: “This fire appears to have been deliberate and the criminal investigations department is investigating it.

“The fire was spotted by officers on patrol, who alerted the fire brigade.

“Officers are following a positive line of enquiry, but if anyone does have information then we ask them to contact us.”

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service added: “The service was alerted at 1.42am on Saturday to reports of a building fire.

“Three fire engines were sent to Merchiston Oval, where  the fire was already well-developed. Firefighters extinguished the fire and ensured the area was made safe before leaving the scene.”
