POLICE are investigating a serious assault in Johnstone town centre which left a man in need of hospital treatment.

The 41-year-old victim was attacked in the town's High Street at around 5.10pm yesterday.

The area was busy with shoppers and commuters at the time, with the emergency services rushing to the scene after the alarm was raised.

Passers-by told of a police cordon being put in place as an investigation got under way.

A Police Scotland spokesperson told The Gazette: "We were called to a report of a serious assault on High Street, Johnstone.

"Emergency services attended and a 41-year-old man was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital, in Paisley, and released after treatment.

"Enquiries are continuing."
