SQUASH ace Kevin Moran is set to take to the court in a bumper weekend of squash for charity next month to mark 10 years since the death of his sister.

The athlete, who has represented Scotland in two Commonwealth Games, will play at venues across the country over three days to raise money for Renfrewshire charity Lisa’s Gift.

The charity was set up by Kevin and Lisa’s parents, Fraser and Carolyn, after Lisa tragically died aged 20 while on an exchange in America.

And 27-year-old Kevin is now set to take the game he loves around the country, where he will play in several exhibition matches and host squash clinics.

He said: “I am looking forward to it and feeling confident now, but if you ask me on the Saturday afternoon I am sure I’ll tell you something different.

“I didn’t want to do something where I was just asking for money. I wanted it to be a bit of an exchange of benefit.

“Hopefully it will also help the clubs as they will be able to make an event out of it. Even though I am only there for an hour, I hope it will help to drive development of squash in the area.”

Fraser and Carolyn , who were both school teachers, established the charity to offer help to pupils finance extra-curricular school activities which they find difficult to afford.

It has so far raised almost £50,000 for children in the area and given many opportunities otherwise not available to them, with money going towards transport, equipment, and more.

And by playing at venues from Dumfries to Thurso, Kevin is hopeful that the charity will soon be able to branch out nationwide.

“It’s ten years since Lisa’s untimely death,” he said, “and every year we would hold memorial events in the church on the anniversary.

“But it got to the point that we decided we wanted to do so much more for Lisa’s memory and so Lisa’s Gifts was born.

“Despite its young age, we are so happy with how the charity is going just now, and that Lisa’s name is now a symbol of hope for so many kids across Renfrewshire.”

The challenge takes place from Friday, July 6, until Sunday, July 8. For more information,  and to see a full list of clubs hosting, visit just giving.com/crowdfunding/kevinssquashtour.
