MEMBERS from a Johnstone Masonic Lodge cycled more than 200 miles in memory of those lost in the line of duty.

More than 35 gallant volunteers of all ages from the Lodge Houston St Johnstone played their part in cycling bikes connected to turbo trainers on Saturday to raise money for SSAFA,  the Armed Forces charity, and Poppyscotland in honour of those who lost their lives during First World War.

During the Great War, seven members of the lodge died during the battles at Ypres, Mons and the Somme.

Today’s members cycled 242 miles, the lodge number and the distance of the main battles of the Western Front, to mark the centenary year of the end of the war.

In 1914, the lodge donated £20, more than £1,000 in today’s money, to the National Relief Fund to help thousands of Johnstone residents and now they look set to match that figure with donations already exceeding £650.

Brian Smolarek, Right Worshipful Master, said: “The Lodge is proud of the achievements and sacrifice of the brethren from WW1 right through to those serving today in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“We hope our virtual cycle is a fitting tribute which also recognises the important part Armed Forces charities continue to play in supporting veterans and their families.

“They have sacrificed a great deal for us, so now it’s our turn to support them.”

SSAFA has been providing lifelong support to the forces and their families since 1885.

Every year staff and volunteers help more than 67,000 people, from Second World War veterans to young men and women who have served in more recent conflicts.
