ANGRY locals have hit out at Renfrewshire Council over the state of several roundabouts at the entrance to Kilbarchan.

The main cause for concern is the roundabout at the A737, which used to be full of greenery before concerns it reduced visibility on the road led to the removal of bushes and plants.

But, what’s left has become quickly unkempt and full of weeds.

And the Kilbarchan Community Council is concerned the roundabout is now an eyesore for visitors to the village.

Helen Kissel, secretary of the community council, said: “The appearance of the roundabouts do nothing to enhance the gateway to the village.

“The roundabouts were created in the village at the opening of the A737 Johnstone bypass in 1993 and were initially planted with shrubs.

“They became very overgrown along with vegetation at the bridge, which then became a visual concern for anyone using the roundabouts.

“They eventually became very unsightly and at this point the decision was taken to remove and cut back the planting from both the bridge and the roundabouts.

“They are now unkempt, ugly and full of dead weeds.”

Councillor Derek Bibby, who represents Kilbarchan as part of his ward, first reported the issue to the council in July.

He said: “The SNP administration’s flagship policy is to keep Renfrewshire clean and improve the environment.

“It seems this does not include Kilbarchan and the state of the weeds is an indication the policy leaves something to be desired.

“I am aware that similar spraying has recently been undertaken in Erskine, which includes the ward of the leader of the council and constituents are asking ‘why not Kilbarchan?’.

“The council needs to address this issue immediately and ensure the entrance to the village is maintained to an acceptable level.”

The council has said it is planning to fix the problem in the near future.

A Renfrewshire Council spokesperson said: “Roundabouts at the A737 entering Kilbarchan were treated in the summer and we are arranging to remove the dead growth now the treatment has taken effect.

“Work is also scheduled to address foliage at Waterside Terrace nearby and we would be happy to meet the community council to discuss any concerns further.”
