THE first stage of a programme which aims to boost the future of Erskine town centre has ended with a pledge that the community will ‘continue to be at the centre’ of shaping the final action plan.

The Erskine Town Centre Charrette saw residents, businesses and community organisations work with council officers to discuss issues facing the town centre and to develop practical proposals which can improve Erskine town centre and riverside.

Erskine Community Sports Centre was the venue for a week of public workshops and residents could also give their comments and suggestions online.

Councillor Terry Kelly, convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Planning and Property Policy Board, said: “The people of Erskine deserve congratulations and thanks for their ideas and input.

“I want to stress that this is the beginning of our dialogue and collaborative working with the community.

“There is a lot of hard work ahead from not just the council but all sections of the community to make the plans a reality but this have been a very positive start. We will be coming forward with a town centre strategy and action plan for Erskine." which will build on the work done so far.”

A range of themes emerged at the end as issues which should be explored further.

Those issues included improving places to live and work – creating more affordable housing and space for start-up businesses, and looking after Erskine – including looking at setting priorities for the maintenance of footpaths." and woodland.

The consultation sessions were led by Renfrewshire-based planning consultant Nick Wright.

He said: “Everyone involved has been absolutely bowled over by the positive reaction of the people of Erskine.

“The discussions– for example on issues such as paths maintenance and public services – were challenging but they were honest and transparent.

“They have helped to build lasting relationships which will help the council and community groups to work together." to turn the ideas into practical and achievable plans.”

The Erskine Town Centre Charrette was organised by Renfrewshire Council and supported by the Scottish Government.
