COUNCIL chiefs expect widespread disruption if public sector strikes go ahead as planned next week (November 30).

STUC affiliated public sector unions plan a large-scale demonstration on St Andrew's Day following a dispute over pensions - with many expected to take to the streets of Paisley in Protest.

Although schools will be closed on the day due to a public holiday, other council services are likely to be severely affected, and council bosses have warned the public to expect disruption.

However, the local authority has promised to do all it can to protect essential services.

A Renfrewshire council spokesman said: "It's clear that if industrial action goes ahead as scheduled, a large number of council services will be reduced or unavailable on November 30.

"Council offices will be closed to the public, including the headquarters building in Paisley and the adjoining Customer Service Centre.

"We apologise for any inconvenience the disruption may cause.

"At this stage our focus is on prioritising essential services that are necessary to safeguard health and safety in the community, and of those in the care of the council. We'd advise people to check for the latest updates on the home page of the council website www.Renfrewshire.gov.uk";
