Police responded to reports of an assault on a young boy at the Pandamonium play area in Erskine on Wednesday.
It is understood the boy was attacked by the man after getting into a confrontation with another child during a football match.
The boy was taken to hospital where he was treated and later released.
A member of staff called the police but the man had fled. Police Scotland confirmed they attended a report of an assault on a child and said inquiries were ongoing.
He added: “We are following a positive line of inquiry.”
