Lauren Haggerty, of Millfield Hill in Erskine, has been named Scotland’s Spectacle Wearer of the Year.

The 20-year-old beat off thousands of entrants for the competition, which has been organised by Specsavers.

Now Lauren, who started wearing glasses at the age of 15, is hoping to get through to the UK final, where a grand prize of £1,000 and a luxury trip to the Bahamas are up for grabs.

She said: “I’m absolutely delighted to be part of SWOTY 2014. I spotted the Specsavers competition on Facebook one night and decided to enter, but I really didn’t expect to get this far.

“I’m thrilled to be a regional finalist and will be saving my store vouchers for when I need an new pair of glasses.’ “Getting through to the final would be fantastic — I’ve got my fingers crossed.” The broadcast production student will soon discover if she has made it through to the UK final for the chance to be crowned winner of her 16 to 24 age category or triumph as overall UK winner of Spectacle Wearer of the Year.

The awards were launched by Girls Aloud singer and West End star Kimberley Walsh earlier this year, who Lauren could meet at the awards ceremony if she triumphs in her age category.

The awards will be held at London’s 8 Northumberland Avenue on Tuesday October 7. All age category winners will win a VIP makeover, with one overall winner taking home the ultimate accolade in specs wearing.
