AN elderly woman from Johnstone was scammed out of thousands of pounds by a bogus caller.

The 76-year-old lady was targeted on Wednesday, July 13 when a man claiming to be from TSB Bank asked for her details over the phone.

He then directed her to transfer money to a separate account and managed to defraud her out of £12,000.

Police are warning the public not to give bank account details to anyone over the phone and to warn people of the consequences.

Inspector Cassie Glass said: "We would like to get the message out to everyone who may have elderly parents not to discuss their bank account over the phone.

"Go into the bank and deal with it face-to-face as you don't not know who you are speaking to at the other end of phone.

"An elderly member of the public in Johnstone has fallen victim to fraud over the phone as a result.

"This woman had £12,000 taken from her and the CID are currently looking into it."
