A MAN has died after being struck by a train near Johnstone station.

The 27-year-old was hit by the train at around 1.45pm on Sunday, October 2.

Commuters were faced with delays following the incident which police are not treating as suspicious.  Scotrail suspended train services between Glasgow Central via Ayr and Largs following the incident.

Passengers faced delays of around an hour and 15 minutes and cancellations while emergency services dealt with the situation. 

A British Transport spokesman said: "Just before 1.50pm on Sunday, October 2, we were called to Johnstone station after reports a person was struck by a train. 

"Officers attended alongside paramedics however a 27-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. His family have been informed. 

"We are not treating this incident as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the Procurator Fiscal."

A spokesman for Network Rail added: "There was an incident in the Elderslie area near Johnstone station on Sunday, October 2 at 1.45pm.

"The train was heading from Glasgow south towards Ayrshire.

"It affected services going to Ayr such as Kilwinning and Largs

"The incident was reported at 1.46pm and trains were running again by 3pm - an hour and 15 minutes for the incident to be dealt with.

"Half a dozen trains were affected at the time."
