ORGANISERS of a church fete in Johnstone saw their prayers answered as rain steered clear of the annual event.

There was a host of entertainment for families to enjoy at St Aidan’s Church, with people of all ages going along.

Margaret MacGregor, who helped to organise the event, told the Gazette: “The event took place between 11am and 2pm and we were really lucky with the weather because the rain only came on at about 2.30pm, when we were clearing up.

“There was a bouncy castle, beat-the-goalie contest and we had some lovely home baking. There was also a tombola stall, a bottle stall and knitting, books, DVDs and second-hand jewellery for sale, so there was something for everyone.”

Margaret said the fete was a team effort, with a social committee taking the lead and the entire congregation showing its support.

She added: “We started holding the event some years ago when Our Holy Redeemer, which was in Elderslie, St Anthony’s and St Aidan’s all joined together to form one church.

“At that time, it was a way to get the parishes to come together but it has just been such a nice event and we have all enjoyed it so much that we have kept the tradition going for around eight years now.

“The proceeds from the fete will go towards the church. Of course, it is always important to boost church funds but there were people of all ages having a lovely time together, so it is not just about fundraising, it is much more than that.”
