PRIMARY pupils from across Johnstone pulled on their football boots to help kick sectarianism out of the community.

Several schools in the town were represented in the 10th Active Schools Fordbank Primary anti-sectarian football project – which sees P6 pupils work together over two weeks in the build up to a mixed team football tournament.

Youngsters at the host school were joined by counterparts from Cochrane Castle, St David’s and St Anthony’s primaries. Those who weren’t involved on the pitch also contributed to the project by designing anti sectarian posters and learning about prejudice.

Carol McCormick, Fordbank Primary’s headteacher, said: “The first week involves team building exercises with mixed groups from all the schools.

“Then the second week is the game, where 10 pupils from each school play in mixed teams.

“Everyone gets medals for taking part and those who weren’t playing the game created anti-sectarian posters.”

The event looks to highlight ways to tackle prejudice and precedes a wider quality project that youngsters will study in P7.

Parents and members of the community were invited along to the match to cheer on youngsters and find out more about the project.

Ms McCormick added: “It was a great day for everyone and parents enjoyed finding out about the topic the kids were studying.”
