HE pledged to his grandmother on his first day of primary school that he would never miss a single day.

And now Liam McInteer has kept that promise – even though his gran, Jeanette Potter, has sadly passed away.

The 12-year-old was presented with a special trophy for perfect attendance by his head teacher as his proud mum, Carol, looked on.

Carol said: “I’m so proud of Liam that I can’t even put it into words.

“It’s more the fact he made this promise to my mum. You don’t really think, in the back of your mind, that he’ll really do it or that a young child like that is serious.

“It’s just overwhelming.”

Carol’s parents, Jeanette and Alan, were both teachers with Jeanette teaching at Johnstone High School, where Liam will go after the summer holidays.

Liam and his gran, who passed away in October 2012, were extremely close.

Carol, from Johnstone, told our sister title The Evening Times: “Liam was very close to my mum. They did everything together and would go on special days out together.

“He’s also very close to my dad and they do all sorts of things and go on crazy adventures together. But when my mum died he was only eight so it hit him very hard.

“When he was starting primary one he said to my mum, ‘I’ll give 100 per cent every day and I’ll be there 100 per cent of the time too.’”

Liam, who is big brother to Calum and Kendall and is due to become a big brother for the third time in a few weeks, has the good fortune to never have been seriously ill.

And his mum said there is no secret to perfect attendance other than determination.

She added: “Liam’s determination to be there is what has helped his success.

“There’s no magic pill or special vitamin you can take. He has just been lucky not to be ill and is absolutely determined never to miss a day.”

Fordbank Primary head teacher Carol McCormick said Liam is a “model pupil” and thrives thanks to the support of Carol and his dad, William.

She said: “Liam is a model pupil in every way.

“He is a hard worker and a great role model who shows really great maturity. He’s just lovely – and also comes from a very supportive family with his parents and his grandpa Alan.

“Liam is a good all rounder – a brilliant footballer and athlete who has gained recognition for his sporting achievements.

“I wish we would could keep him!”
